Walk through any growing city and you will notice green spaces taking many forms. A sprawling public park, a row of shade-giving trees along a busy road, a quiet wetland on the edge of town, a riverbank slowly being restored. These are not random patches of nature. They are distinct categories of urban forestry, each playing a specific role in keeping cities liveable, cooler, and healthier. Urban forestry is the science and art of managing trees and green resources in and around cities to deliver ecological, social, and economic benefits. Understanding its different types helps us see why a city needs more than just one kind of green space to truly thrive.

What urban forestry actually covers
Urban forestry is broader than most people assume. It is not limited to dense clusters of trees. It includes individual trees, street trees, parks, gardens, riverbanks, and even the green cover in private yards and along utility corridors. In short, every tree and shrub within an urban area is part of the urban forest, whether it stands alone on a footpath or grows within a protected woodland.
This wide definition matters because cities are complex. A single park cannot do everything. Shade along a road, water filtration in a wetland, and biodiversity in a nature preserve are all different functions. Each type of urban green space is suited to a different job. When planners combine them thoughtfully, the city as a whole becomes more resilient to heat, flooding, and pollution. Let us look at the main types and what each one offers.
Urban parks
Parks are the most visible and familiar form of urban forestry. They are dedicated green spaces, usually managed by municipal bodies, that residents use for recreation, relaxation, and social gatherings. Think of Cubbon Park in Bengaluru or Shalimar Bagh in Srinagar. Beyond their beauty, parks deliver measurable benefits that touch daily life.
Recreational and social value
Parks give people a place to walk, exercise, play, and meet others. This is not a minor benefit. Access to green space is linked to better physical and mental health. Research shows that contact with urban green spaces can promote stress recovery, support psychological healing, and improve concentration and productivity. In dense cities where homes are small and crowded, a nearby park often becomes the only open space available to families.
Ecological benefits
Parks are also working ecosystems. Older parks with mature trees and diverse species deliver far more than younger, sparsely planted ones. A study of parks in Bengaluru found that old urban parks with larger trees and greater species diversity provided much more environmental benefit and ecosystem services. These spaces absorb carbon dioxide, cool the surrounding air, support birds and insects, and help rainwater soak into the ground rather than run off into drains.
Street trees and boulevards
If parks are the lungs of a city, street trees are its everyday green companions. These are the trees planted along roads, footpaths, and landscaped boulevards. They are easy to overlook, but they do a remarkable amount of work in the spaces where people spend most of their time outdoors.
Shade and cooling
Roads and buildings absorb heat during the day and release it slowly, creating what is known as the urban heat island effect, where built-up areas stay noticeably warmer than their surroundings. Street trees fight this directly. Their canopies shade pavements and walls, lowering surface temperatures and making streets more comfortable to walk along. This shade reduces the need for air conditioning in nearby buildings and makes public transport and walking more pleasant during hot months.
Pollution and climate benefits
Street trees are surprisingly powerful tools for sustainability. They filter air pollutants, absorb noise, and manage stormwater. Researchers note that urban trees reduce pollution, mitigate stormwater, lower the urban heat island effect, and improve both physical and mental health of residents. The same research highlights that street trees can be a low-cost tool for creating sustainable cities in developing countries, which makes them especially relevant for rapidly urbanising regions.
Beauty and economic value
Landscaped boulevards and tree-lined avenues also raise the visual appeal of a neighbourhood. This is not just about looks. Greenery along streets and in commercial areas can increase property values and bring commercial benefits. A well-shaded, attractive street draws shoppers, supports local businesses, and improves the overall sense of place.
Other important types of urban forestry
Beyond parks and street trees, several other categories complete the picture of a green city. These often deal with water, biodiversity, and connectivity, areas where trees alone are not enough.
Gardens
Gardens, both public and private, are a core part of the urban forest. Botanical gardens, community gardens, and home gardens together form a network of small green pockets across a city. Urban forestry includes public and private parks and gardens, street tree plantations, botanical gardens, and even cemeteries. These spaces support pollinators, grow food and medicinal plants, and give residents a direct relationship with nature. The government has recognised this by promoting Nagar Vatikas, or urban gardens, alongside larger urban forests.
Greenways and river corridors
Greenways are linear green spaces, often following old railway lines, canals, or rivers, that connect different parts of a city. River corridors are a special and vital form of these. When a city restores the land along a river, it creates a continuous ribbon of green that links scattered green spaces, allows wildlife to move safely, and gives people pathways to walk and cycle.
India has begun investing in these connections. Creating blue-green corridors involves linking rivers, lakes, and wetlands with parks, pedestrian pathways, and green spaces. For example, Pune’s Mula-Mutha riverfront project combines flood management with public space and native planting. Such corridors matter because urbanisation often breaks ecological links; the concretisation of lake and river boundaries has ruptured these ecological corridors and destroyed habitats.
Wetlands
Wetlands are among the most undervalued parts of the urban forest, yet they are quietly essential. These include lakes, ponds, marshes, floodplains, and drainage channels within or near cities. Historically, urban wetlands contributed to water supply, stormwater management, groundwater recharge, and local microclimate regulation. They act as natural sponges, absorbing excess rainwater and reducing the risk of urban flooding.
The most striking example is in Kolkata. The East Kolkata Wetland is considered the natural kidneys of the Kolkata metropolitan region, treating over 900 million litres of wastewater daily while supporting local agriculture and fisheries. That single wetland system does work that would otherwise require expensive treatment plants. Sadly, many urban wetlands face pressure from land conversion, pollution, encroachment, and fragmentation, which is why their protection is now a planning priority.
Nature preserves
Nature preserves are areas of protected woodland or natural habitat kept largely free from development. Within cities, these surviving fragments of forest are precious. Delhi’s Sanjay Van is one example, described as one of the city’s few surviving urban forests. Preserves protect biodiversity, offer refuge to native species, and give residents a glimpse of what the landscape looked like before the city grew. They also serve as living laboratories for students and researchers studying urban ecology.
How these types come together in policy
Recognising that cities need all these forms of greenery, the government launched the Nagar Van Yojana in 2020 under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The scheme aims to create 1,000 Nagar Vans and Nagar Vatikas in cities with urban local bodies, involving local communities, NGOs, and educational institutions. Its salient features include creating green and aesthetic spaces, conserving important regional flora, and improving the urban environment through pollution mitigation, cleaner air, noise reduction, water harvesting, and reduction of the heat island effect.
The scheme provides financial assistance of around four lakh rupees per hectare to support fencing, soil conservation, plantation, and maintenance. It deliberately blends the different types of urban forestry we have discussed, combining wooded blocks, biodiversity planting, rainwater harvesting, and public amenities like jogging tracks and footpaths into single integrated spaces. This reflects the modern understanding that a healthy city needs a connected network of green and blue spaces, not isolated patches.
Why the variety matters
Each type of urban forestry answers a different need. Parks provide recreation and biodiversity. Street trees deliver shade and clean air exactly where people live and work. Gardens connect residents to nature on a small scale. Greenways and river corridors stitch the city together and let wildlife move. Wetlands manage water and filter waste. Nature preserves protect what remains of the original landscape.
No single category can replace the others. A city with beautiful parks but polluted, encroached wetlands will still flood. A city with protected forests but no street trees will still bake in the summer heat. The goal of urban forestry is to weave these types into a complete, functioning green network, often called blue-green infrastructure, that makes cities cooler, cleaner, safer, and more pleasant to live in. As urban populations keep rising, getting this mix right is one of the most practical investments a city can make in its own future.
