Few ideas have shaped modern society as profoundly as the belief that education can change people, and through them, change the world. We tend to think of schooling as a way to get a job or pass an exam. But thinkers across the last century argued that education does something far deeper: it transforms how we behave, how we relate to one another, and how a society renews itself. This post explores education as a tool for human development and social transformation, drawing on the ideas of John Dewey and Paulo Freire, and connecting them to development goals that have shaped policy in countries like ours.

What does education actually mean?

The word “education” comes from a root that simply means a process of leading or bringing up. But the thinkers who studied it most closely saw it as something more active than just passing on facts. They viewed education as a way of forming the dispositions, attitudes, and behaviours that allow a person to participate fully in the life around them.

John Dewey, the American philosopher whose 1916 book Democracy and Education remains a cornerstone of educational thought, described education as a fostering, nurturing, and cultivating process. For Dewey, a society sustains itself through continuous self-renewal, and that renewal happens through the educational growth of its younger members. In other words, every generation has to be brought into the shared ideas, purposes, and values of the group, and education is the method by which this happens.

Dewey put this idea in a memorable way when he compared education to biological survival. He argued that what nutrition and reproduction are to physiological life, education is to social life. A society that stops educating its members would slowly lose its character, the same way a body that stops eating would weaken. This reframes education not as an optional extra but as a basic condition for any community to continue existing.

From transmission to transformation

One of Dewey’s key insights was that you cannot simply pour beliefs and aspirations into a person the way you pour water into a glass. Knowledge and values cannot be physically extracted from one mind and inserted into another. They have to be developed through experience. This is why Dewey is associated with what we now call constructivist learning, where students actively construct understanding through experience rather than passive instruction.

This view matters because it changes what we expect a school to do. If education is about transforming behaviour and building the capacity to think, then a classroom that only asks students to memorise and repeat is failing at its real job. Dewey was alarmed that schools often produced passive, compliant pupils instead of reflective and informed decision makers. The goal, for him, was to develop mature and effective citizens.

Why Dewey linked education to democracy

Dewey did not see education and democracy as two separate subjects that happen to overlap. He saw them as deeply intertwined. For him, democracy was not just a system of voting and government. It was a way of living together, and education had a central role in sustaining it.

The core argument is straightforward. A democracy depends on citizens who can think for themselves, cooperate with others, and solve shared problems. These are not abilities people are born with. They have to be learned. Dewey believed that schools should function as miniature communities where students learn to cooperate, make decisions collectively, and see problems from multiple perspectives, mirroring the processes of a democratic society.

Education and equal opportunity

This connection has a powerful implication for fairness. If democracy requires educated, capable citizens, then a society committed to democracy must make education available to everyone, not just a privileged few. Dewey argued that democracy demands contributions from people throughout society, which means the experiences of ordinary workers and minorities must be taken seriously, not just those of experts.

Dewey saw genuine democracy as requiring an ongoing commitment to learning together. He believed that democratic governance imposes an obligation on people to learn to work together to solve social problems. Education, then, is what makes equal participation possible. Without it, the right to vote becomes hollow, because citizens lack the knowledge and confidence to shape how their community is actually run.

Paulo Freire: education as a practice of freedom

While Dewey was writing in the United States, a Brazilian educator named Paulo Freire was developing a related but more radical view from his work teaching literacy to peasant labourers. His 1968 book Pedagogy of the Oppressed has since been translated into more than 17 languages and continues to shape teaching across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Freire is best known for his critique of what he called the banking model of education. He used this term to describe a system where students are treated as containers into which educators deposit knowledge. The teacher talks and the students listen. The teacher knows everything and the students know nothing. The teacher chooses the content and the students simply adapt to it.

Why the banking model is a problem

Freire argued that this approach does real harm. When students are reduced to passive receptacles, they do not develop the critical thinking that would let them understand and change their own situation. He believed that the more students focus on storing the “deposits” handed to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness that allows them to intervene in the world as transformers of it. In this sense, the banking model quietly reinforces existing power structures, because it trains people to accept the world as it is rather than question it.

For Freire, education is never neutral. As one summary of his thought puts it, all education is political, either educating to maintain the status quo or helping to critique and change reality. There is no middle ground where teaching simply transfers harmless facts.

The alternative: problem-posing education

Freire’s solution was an approach he called problem-posing education. Instead of depositing answers, the teacher poses problems and invites dialogue. Both teacher and student bring something to the table: the teacher offers theoretical insight, while the student brings the richness of lived experience. This creates what Freire saw as a democratic, horizontal relationship built on mutual respect, where both contribute to the production of knowledge.

The payoff is transformation. When people develop critical consciousness, resignation gives way to a drive for inquiry and change. Freire believed that marginalised communities, whether defined by class, caste, or colonial history, could use education not to fit into existing power structures but to transform them. This is education as a practice of freedom, and it remains directly relevant wherever inequality limits who gets to learn and on what terms.

Education as social capital and a driver of development

The ideas of Dewey and Freire help explain why education matters so much. Modern development economics gives us a language for measuring that value. One useful idea is social capital, which refers to the networks, relationships, and shared norms that allow people to cooperate and act collectively. Education is one of the most powerful ways a society builds this capital, because it equips people not just with skills but with the trust, communication, and shared understanding that make collective action possible.

This is more than theory. Community involvement, partnerships between schools, local communities, and NGOs, and networks of volunteers have all helped improve educational infrastructure, teacher training, and outcomes. The relationships built around education feed back into stronger communities, which in turn support better education.

Education and the Millennium Development Goals

The link between education and development was formalised on the global stage in September 2000, when 189 nations gathered at the UN Millennium Summit and committed to a set of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by 2015. These were measurable, time-bound targets covering poverty, hunger, health, gender equality, and education.

Education sat at the heart of this agenda. The second goal aimed at achieving universal primary education, ensuring that every child could complete a full cycle of primary schooling. The reasoning was captured in a striking observation that no country has ever climbed the human development ladder without steady investment in education. Education was treated not as one goal among many but as a foundation that supports progress on all the others, from health to gender equality to economic growth.

Progress was real, though uneven. Youth literacy here rose dramatically, from around 61.9% in 1991 toward the low 90s by 2011, while schemes like the Mid Day Meal programme significantly improved school attendance by incentivising enrolment. Yet gender disparity persisted in rural areas and among disadvantaged groups, showing that access alone does not erase deeper inequalities.

From access to empowerment

The deeper purpose behind these targets connects back to Dewey and Freire. Education is widely viewed as a mechanism of social revolution, and so education leads to empowerment. The legal expression of this idea came with the Right to Education Act of 2009, enacted under Article 21A of the Constitution, which made free and compulsory education a fundamental right for every child aged 6 to 14, regardless of income, gender, caste, or creed.

The Act does more than spread literacy. It reserves a share of seats in private schools for children from economically weaker sections, creates School Management Committees that empower communities and promote holistic child development, and tries to break down the barriers of poverty and caste. This is social capital in action: education becomes a shared resource that strengthens the whole community, not just the individual student.

Of course, the work is far from finished. Enrolment has risen sharply, but quality and dropout rates remain serious concerns, and there is wide agreement that getting children into school has not always meant getting them a good education. This gap between access and quality is exactly the kind of problem Freire would urge us to confront critically rather than accept. The official framing from the education ministry echoes the older thinkers, describing education as playing a remedial role in balancing the socio-economic fabric of the country and warranting the all-round development of its citizens.

Tying the ideas together

Looking across these thinkers and policies, a clear thread emerges. Dewey showed that education renews society and sustains democracy by forming capable, cooperative citizens. Freire showed that education can either trap people in passivity or liberate them to transform their world, depending on how it is practised. And the development frameworks of recent decades translated these philosophical insights into measurable commitments, treating education as the foundation of human development and social capital.

The common message is that education is never just about the individual learner. It shapes the kind of society we live in. A community that educates its members for critical thinking, cooperation, and participation is building the capacity to govern itself and improve itself. A community that treats education as mere information transfer, or that leaves large groups behind, limits its own future. Seen this way, the quality and reach of education becomes one of the most important questions any society can ask about itself.
