Every conversation about a country’s future eventually circles back to its people: how many there are, how fast that number changes, how long they live, and how healthy they remain. These are not just statistics on a census sheet. They shape whether there are enough jobs, hospital beds, school seats, and natural resources to go around. The study of how populations grow, shrink, and change over time is called population dynamics, and it sits at the very heart of whether development can be sustained. With a population of around 1.3 billion and a demographic profile shifting rapidly, understanding this relationship is essential for anyone thinking seriously about the road ahead.

Understanding population dynamics

Population dynamics refers to the way the size and structure of a population change over time. These changes are driven by a handful of measurable forces, and each one pulls on development in a different direction. Demographers track several key indicators to make sense of what is happening and what is likely to come next.

The most important of these are fertility (how many children are born), mortality (how many people die), morbidity (how much illness exists in a population), the couple protection rate (the share of couples using contraception), and the dependency ratio (the balance between working-age people and those who depend on them). Together, these factors determine whether a country is getting younger or older, growing or stabilising, and whether its economy will have the workers and resources it needs.

Fertility, mortality, and the demographic transition

Over the past century, India moved through what demographers call the demographic transition. In simple terms, this is the shift from high birth rates and high death rates to low birth rates and low death rates. A study commissioned by UNFPA India notes that mortality fell sharply in the middle of the twentieth century while fertility stayed high for several decades. This gap caused rapid population growth that accelerated after the 1950s, before the rate of growth began to slow as fertility finally declined.

The numbers tell the story clearly. The Total Fertility Rate fell from around six children per woman in the mid-twentieth century to 3.4 in 1992-93, reaching the replacement level of 2.1 by 2019. Replacement level is the point at which each generation exactly replaces itself, so a population eventually stabilises rather than growing indefinitely.

The couple protection rate and dependency ratio

The couple protection rate, closely related to the contraceptive prevalence rate, measures how many couples actively use family planning methods. This indicator directly shapes fertility. According to the National Health Mission, contraceptive use among married women aged 15-49 stood at 66.7 percent in the most recent National Family Health Survey, with awareness of contraception now almost universal. A higher couple protection rate means fewer unintended pregnancies, which improves the health of mothers and children and gives families more control over their resources.

The dependency ratio tells us how heavy a burden the working-age population carries. A high dependency ratio means a relatively small group of earners must support a large group of children and elderly people. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation explains that a high dependency ratio increases the burden on the economically active population to provide social services, and it also raises the amount of unpaid care work, which most often falls on women due to social expectations around gender roles.

Fertility and development

Fertility is perhaps the single most powerful lever in population dynamics, because it determines how many new people enter the system each year. When fertility is high, the population grows quickly, and that growth places direct pressure on the resources a country needs to develop sustainably.

How high fertility strains resources

Children need food, clothing, housing, education, medical care, and supervision, all of which require money or parental time. A review published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information points out that when fertility rates decline, some of these resources can be redirected toward formal employment, better healthcare and education systems, and new technologies. In other words, high fertility locks up resources in raising the next generation, while falling fertility frees them up for broader development.

At the household level, families with many children must stretch limited income across more mouths, which can limit how much they invest in each child’s schooling and nutrition. At the national level, a rapidly growing young population demands constant expansion of schools, clinics, and housing simply to keep pace. When growth outstrips a country’s ability to build this infrastructure, the quality of services declines and progress stalls.

Fertility, natural resources, and the environment

Sustainable development requires that today’s growth does not come at the expense of future generations. High fertility intensifies the competition for land, water, and energy. More people means more demand for farmland, more pressure on groundwater, and more consumption of fuel. Research examining child mortality across countries has even found that higher fertility rates are associated with worse outcomes in high-mortality settings, illustrating how population pressure and weak development can reinforce each other in a difficult cycle.

The demographic dividend

There is, however, an opportunity hidden in this transition. When fertility declines, the share of children in the population falls before the share of elderly people rises. This creates a window where the working-age population is unusually large relative to dependents. Economists call the resulting boost to growth the demographic dividend. The NCBI review describes the demographic dividend as the accelerated economic growth that can occur when declining fertility reduces the dependency ratio.

India is currently passing through this favourable window, with a large working-age share and a comparatively low dependency ratio. But the dividend is not automatic. It only pays off if there are enough jobs, skills, and healthy workers to put the larger workforce to productive use. Analysis of population structure and economic growth in India argues that achieving higher savings is critical, and that a falling dependency ratio supports growth only when accompanied by productivity gains. This is why fertility decline alone cannot guarantee development; it must be matched by investment in human capital.

Mortality and morbidity effects

If fertility governs how many people enter a population, mortality and morbidity govern the quality and length of the lives they live. Mortality is the rate of death, while morbidity refers to the presence of illness and disability. Both are powerful indicators of development, and both feed back into the economy through their effect on labour and human capital.

Why infant, child, and maternal mortality matter

Three measures deserve special attention: the infant mortality rate (deaths before the age of one per 1,000 live births), the under-five mortality rate, and the maternal mortality ratio (maternal deaths per 100,000 live births). These figures are widely treated as a barometer of a society’s overall health and development. A review in Discover Public Health describes child mortality as a fundamental indicator of development, reflecting the effectiveness of health systems, socio-economic conditions, and the success of public health interventions.

India has made real progress here. The Indian Journal of Medical Research reports that the Maternal Mortality Ratio fell from 437 per 100,000 live births in 1992-93 to 88 in 2020-2022, putting the country on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal target of fewer than 70. These gains were supported by rising female literacy and growing use of modern contraception. The Sustainable Development Goals themselves set a clear benchmark, aiming to reduce under-five mortality to at least as low as 25 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030.

Health is not just a humanitarian concern; it is an economic engine. A workforce weakened by disease produces less, earns less, and saves less. Studies on health expenditure and economic growth identify child mortality as a key predictor of health and productivity in later life, making it an important marker of socio-economic development. Poor health in childhood often translates into reduced earning capacity in adulthood.

The connection works in both directions. Reducing child mortality expands the future labour force and builds human capital, which in turn supports economic growth. When fewer children die and fewer people fall chronically ill, more individuals reach working age in good health, stay productive for longer, and contribute to the savings and investment that fuel development. High morbidity, by contrast, drains household incomes through medical costs and lost workdays, pushing families toward poverty.

How family planning ties health and fertility together

Mortality, morbidity, and fertility are not separate problems but parts of one interconnected system, and family planning is a thread that runs through all of them. Effective contraception lets couples space and limit births, which protects the health of mothers and children. A study published in Frontiers in Global Women’s Health notes that a large share of abortion-related and obstetric mortality and morbidity could be averted through effective contraception by women wishing to postpone or stop childbearing. By preventing closely spaced and unwanted pregnancies, family planning lowers maternal and infant deaths while easing the fertility pressure on resources.

Bringing the relationship together

The relationship between population dynamics and sustainable development is one of constant feedback. High fertility drives rapid growth that strains resources and infrastructure. Falling fertility, combined with declining mortality and morbidity, opens a demographic window that can power economic growth, but only if the workforce is healthy, educated, and employed. The dependency ratio measures the balance of this equation, while the couple protection rate gives policymakers a tool to influence it.

Sustainable development, at its core, asks whether progress today can be maintained without exhausting the resources and human potential needed tomorrow. Population dynamics determine both the size of the demand on those resources and the size of the workforce available to renew them. Managing this balance, through health systems, education, and reproductive choice, is therefore not a side issue in development. It is the foundation on which everything else is built.
