India is now the world’s most populous country, and that single fact reshapes nearly every conversation about development. When the United Nations adopted its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the targets on poverty, hunger, health, education, water, and energy were not designed in isolation from demographic reality. They were built around it. The size of a population, how fast it grows, and how it is distributed directly decide whether a country can deliver clean water to every home, a school seat to every child, and a decent meal to every plate. The UN’s own analysis stresses that accounting for population trends in development planning is essential for goals tied to poverty, food security, health, education, and the environment. This post unpacks how population and the SDGs are wired together, why family size matters at the household level, and how rapid growth strains the resources every goal depends on.

Several of the 17 SDGs are population goals in everything but name. They measure progress as a ratio of resources or services to people, which means the denominator, the population, is always part of the equation. Six goals stand out for their close demographic links.

Goal 1: no poverty

Poverty and population are tightly bound. High fertility rates can lock families and entire regions into poverty, because the number of people needing support outpaces the income available to provide it. Organisations tracking demographic pressures note that large family size and poverty frequently reinforce each other, especially where people lack the means to choose how many children they have. India has made measurable progress here. The NITI Aayog multidimensional poverty estimate fell sharply, with reports showing a decline from about 29% in 2013-14 to roughly 11% in 2022-23, yet the absolute number of people still affected remains large simply because the base population is so vast.

Goal 2: zero hunger

Hunger and nutrition sit at the centre of the population debate. More people means more food must be produced, distributed, and made affordable. Even though food production has broadly kept pace with population growth, the gains have leaned toward cereals rather than pulses and other protein sources, which leaves nutritional gaps. The World Food Programme reports that India still faces serious malnutrition, with child stunting at around 35.5% and anaemia affecting 57% of women, according to the National Family Health Survey-5. These figures show that producing enough calories is not the same as feeding people well.

Goals 3 and 4: good health and quality education

Health and education systems must scale with the population they serve. A larger young population requires more clinics, doctors, teachers, and classrooms to maintain the same quality of service. The flip side is encouraging: the UN points out that the demographic transition, including falling fertility and a smaller share of dependent children, creates an opportunity to invest more in the human capital of each young person. Fewer children per family can mean more resources per child for schooling and healthcare, which is why these goals are so sensitive to family planning.

Goals 6 and 7: clean water and affordable energy

Water and energy are perhaps the clearest example of population pressure. Demand for water rises with population growth, urbanisation, and the expanding needs of agriculture and industry. The UN warns that billions of people will lack safe water and sanitation in 2030 unless progress accelerates several times over. Energy follows the same logic. As the UNDP notes, growing populations push up demand for cheap energy, and meeting that demand sustainably requires major investment in solar, wind, and efficiency improvements rather than fossil fuels.

How family size shapes outcomes at home

National statistics can hide the everyday mechanics of how population affects development. The most direct effects show up inside individual households, particularly poorer ones, where each additional member changes the maths of survival.

Per capita income shrinks as the household grows

Income in a poor household is usually fixed by what one or two earners can bring in. When that income is divided among more people, the amount available per person falls. Poverty in India is itself measured against household size: the World Bank’s revised line implies that a family of around 4.5 members needs income above roughly Rs 8,100 a month to escape the poverty classification. A larger family with the same earnings slips further below such thresholds. This is the core reason high fertility can trap households in poverty across generations.

Nutrition gets stretched thin

When a fixed food budget is shared among more mouths, the quantity and quality of each person’s diet suffer. Research on India shows that nutrient intake is influenced positively by the food budget and literacy, and negatively by poverty. In large, low-income families, children are especially vulnerable, because growing bodies need protein and micronutrients that cereal-heavy diets rarely supply. The result is the persistence of stunting and anaemia even in households that are not technically starving.

Health and sanitation pressures multiply

More people in a single dwelling means more demand on the same toilet, the same water source, and the same living space. Crowded conditions raise the risk of infectious disease and make hygiene harder to maintain. Poor sanitation, in turn, feeds back into malnutrition, since repeated infections prevent children from absorbing the nutrients they do consume. Studies on India link unhealthy sanitary practices directly to poor child health outcomes, showing how family size, sanitation, and nutrition form a single connected problem rather than three separate ones.

Resource allocation under rapid population growth

Zoom out from the household and the same dynamic plays out at the scale of the entire country. Rapid population growth does not just add citizens; it adds demand for every public service at once, which makes it harder for governments to expand access faster than the population rises.

Basic amenities struggle to keep pace

Even successful programmes can be outrun by demographic growth. India has expanded toilet access dramatically through the Swachh Bharat Mission and is pursuing universal piped water through the Jal Jeevan Mission. Researchers acknowledge these gains while cautioning that a vast scope for improvement remains given the growing population, urbanisation, and climate pressures. Building infrastructure is only half the task; maintaining it for an ever-larger user base is the harder, ongoing challenge.

Water stress and groundwater depletion

Water is a finite resource, and population growth is one of the main forces depleting it. A review of India’s water and sanitation progress identifies population growth, urbanisation, and industrial expansion as key pressures that reduce both water quality and sanitation services, alongside groundwater depletion and pollution. More people farming, drinking, and manufacturing draw down aquifers faster than they can naturally recharge, turning a renewable resource into a scarce one.

Sustainable energy and overall well-being

Energy ties the whole picture together. Economic growth, clean water treatment, healthcare, and food production all depend on reliable power. As the population and economy expand, energy demand climbs, and the question becomes whether that demand is met with renewables or fossil fuels. India is pursuing an ambitious renewable expansion, but coal still anchored a large share of its primary energy supply as the country balances decarbonisation against the rising energy needs of its population. How that balance is struck will shape progress on climate, health, and economic goals simultaneously.

The point is not that a large population is a problem to be eliminated, but that population dynamics must be planned for rather than ignored. Investing in education, healthcare, and voluntary family planning tends to lower fertility over time, which then eases the pressure on every other goal. This is the logic behind treating population as a lever for development rather than a separate issue. When families have fewer children by choice, per capita income, nutrition, schooling, and access to water and energy all tend to improve together, which is exactly the kind of reinforcing progress the SDGs were designed to capture.
