The Harappan or Indus Valley Civilization is often remembered for its grid-planned streets, brick drains, and mysterious seals. But behind that urban order was a vast economy of skilled hands. Across the cities and smaller towns of this Bronze Age world, artisans shaped clay, stone, metal, and shell into objects that were traded across hundreds of kilometres. Studying how these crafts were made, where they were produced, and how raw materials reached the workshops tells us a great deal about how an early urban society organised work, labour, and trade. This is one of the clearest windows we have into the daily economy of one of the world’s earliest cities.

A civilisation of many crafts
Harappan artisans worked across a remarkable spread of materials. Each craft demanded its own raw materials, tools, and technical knowledge, and the people who practised them were highly specialised. A potter, a coppersmith, and a bead-maker were not interchangeable; they trained in distinct skills. This division of labour is one of the strongest signs that the Harappan economy was organised and not just a collection of households making things for themselves.
Pottery: the everyday craft
Pottery was the most widespread craft and an essential part of daily life. Most pots were wheel-made, which allowed for fast, near-uniform production. Big storage jars, cooking vessels, and small bowls were all turned out in large numbers. Many were painted black on a bright red surface with geometric patterns, plants, and animals, and a few designs even seem to show scenes from stories. Pottery kilns have been found at major sites including Mohenjodaro, Harappa, Nausharo, and Chanhudaro, which points to organised, repeatable firing on a large scale rather than occasional home production.
Metalworking and the bronze age
The Harappans are described as a Bronze Age people, and metal craft was central to their economy. Coppersmiths produced tools, weapons, and ornaments. Most often they used unalloyed copper, but they also mixed copper with tin to make bronze, which is harder and holds an edge better. They used advanced techniques such as casting in moulds, alloying, and soldering. Beyond copper and bronze, artisans worked gold and silver into beads, pendants, amulets, and other small ornaments. The gold tends to be pale in colour, which suggests a high natural silver content.
Bead making: the prized luxury craft
If pottery was the everyday craft, bead making was the prestige one. Harappan beads were made from a wide range of materials, including carnelian, jasper, crystal, quartz, steatite, lapis lazuli, shell, faience, terracotta, gold, silver, and copper. The techniques varied by material. Steatite is a very soft stone, so it could be ground into a powder, made into a paste, and moulded into shapes that would be impossible with harder stone. Harder stones like carnelian were worked differently: nodules were first chipped into rough shapes, then carefully flaked into their final form, and finally ground, polished, and drilled. Archaeologists have found that the rich red of carnelian was produced by firing the yellowish raw stone at stages of production. The fine drilling alone shows a level of technical control that still impresses researchers today.
Shell, seals, and faience
Other crafts rounded out the picture. Shell working turned conch and marine shells into bangles, ladles, and inlay pieces. Seal carving, usually in steatite, produced the famous square seals with animal figures and script that were probably used in trade and administration; more than two thousand have been recovered. Faience, an artificial glazed material, was crafted into beads and small objects. Textiles were made too: spindle whorls for spinning thread are common finds, and cotton threads have been recovered at Harappa, showing that weaving was part of the craft economy even though cloth rarely survives.
How archaeologists identify a craft centre
How do we know where things were made? Archaeologists look for a specific set of clues. A genuine craft centre usually shows raw materials such as stone nodules, whole shells, or copper ore; tools like drills and furnaces; unfinished objects caught mid-production; and, crucially, waste material. The chips, rejects, and broken pieces left behind are often the single best indicator of where a craft was actually practised, because finished goods could have been carried anywhere, but production debris stays put.
Chanhudaro: a town devoted to crafts
Chanhudaro, a small settlement in the Sindh region around 130 kilometres from Mohenjodaro, is one of the clearest examples. Unlike the great cities, it was a modest town whose main business was manufacturing. Excavations there revealed work in bead making, shell cutting, metalworking, seal making, and weight making. A bead factory complete with a furnace was uncovered, along with raw materials, beads at every stage of production, and the specialised drills used to bore through carnelian. Its prized carnelian beads, often red with a white etched design, were luxury items that travelled far. Such a concentration of evidence in a single small town shows how production could be organised around specific crafts.
Nausharo and other production sites
Nausharo, located in present-day Balochistan, is another site that has yielded pottery kilns and evidence of organised production, helping researchers trace how craft traditions developed over time. Lothal in Gujarat held workshops for faience and stone beads, coppersmiths, shell cutters, and potters, and it became especially known for tiny micro-beads. Sites such as Lothal, Chanhudaro, and Dholavira together reveal the full sequence of bead production, because the specialised drills and waste from different stages turn up across them. The pattern is consistent: smaller centres focused on making goods, then sent finished products on to larger cities.
Craft production inside the great cities
The biggest cities did far more than govern and house people; they were also major manufacturing hubs. Mohenjodaro, one of the largest Harappan cities, contained workshops and production areas where metalworking, pottery, and bead making went on alongside the city’s other functions. The presence of many crafts inside a single large settlement points to organised, large-scale production rather than scattered, occasional work. Cities concentrated skilled labour, demand, and the means to coordinate it.
The flow of goods between settlements is telling. Beads from Chanhudaro and Lothal were most likely carried to large urban centres such as Mohenjodaro and Harappa, while coastal centres supplied shell objects. Lothal, often described as a port town with one of the world’s earliest known docks, shows how manufacturing and trade were tied together. This exchange between small specialised towns and big consumer cities is exactly what you would expect from an integrated urban economy.
Sourcing raw materials across distances
One of the most striking features of Harappan crafts is that the raw materials often came from far away. Some inputs, like clay and ordinary wood, were available locally. But fine stone, shell, and metal had to be brought in, sometimes across hundreds of kilometres. Researchers have reconstructed several strategies the Harappans used to keep their workshops supplied.
Settling near the source
The simplest approach was to place a settlement right where a material occurred. Shell-rich coastal areas gave rise to centres like Nageshwar and Balakot, which specialised in shell objects. Lothal sat close to sources of carnelian from the Bharuch area of Gujarat, steatite from south Rajasthan and north Gujarat, and metal from Rajasthan. Far to the north, the outpost of Shortughai in Afghanistan was located near the finest source of lapis lazuli, the deep-blue stone that was highly valued. Settling near the resource cut out much of the difficulty of transport.
Sending expeditions and long-distance trade
Where settling was not practical, the Harappans appear to have sent expeditions. Copper was procured from the Khetri region of Rajasthan, and gold from areas to the south. These journeys would have meant contact with local communities, and the appearance of Harappan items such as steatite micro-beads in these regions is read as evidence of that contact. In the Khetri area, archaeologists identified a separate, non-Harappan group known as the Ganeshwar-Jodhpura culture, marked by its own pottery and a striking abundance of copper objects, which probably supplied copper to Harappan settlements. The civilisation also reached overseas: copper was imported from Oman, and chemical traces of nickel in both Omani and Harappan metal point to a shared source. Carnelian beads made at Chanhudaro have even been found in Mesopotamian tombs, confirming long-distance trade in finished luxury goods.
Moving goods: transport and routes
Getting heavy raw materials and finished products from place to place required reliable transport. The Harappans used bullock carts over land and boats along rivers and the coast. The Indus and its tributaries acted as natural highways, while coastal and maritime routes linked the civilisation to distant regions. The remarkable detail in this system is its consistency: the cubical stone weights used to measure goods were standardised across the entire Harappan zone, which would have made trade between distant settlements far smoother.
Taken together, these crafts and trade networks reflect a sophisticated economy. The continuity is striking too. The carnelian bead industry around Khambhat in Gujarat still uses techniques close to those of the Harappans, more than four thousand years later. Sites like Dholavira, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserve evidence of this manufacturing world, and when the President of India visited the site she was shown its ancient bead-making factory among other finds. The arts and crafts of the Harappans were not only practical objects but also expressions of technological skill and cultural meaning, balancing function with artistry.
