More than four thousand years ago, a city stood on the banks of the Indus River that was built not by accident but by design. Mohenjodaro, whose name is often translated as the “Mound of the Dead,” remains one of the clearest windows into how the Harappan people organised urban life. What makes it extraordinary is not a single palace or temple, but the careful arrangement of the whole settlement: a raised western mound, a sprawling residential quarter, streets that meet at right angles, covered drains running beneath them, and wells dotted across the neighbourhoods. The UNESCO World Heritage listing describes it as evidence of an early and strictly planned system of town planning. Understanding this layout is essential for anyone studying how cities first took shape on the subcontinent.

The citadel and the lower town
The single most important feature of Mohenjodaro’s layout is its division into two distinct parts. To the west stood the Citadel, a smaller area built on a high platform of mud brick. To the east lay the Lower Town, a much larger residential and commercial zone. This two-fold structure is the signature of a classic Harappan city, repeated across sites like Harappa and Kalibangan, which tells us the pattern was deliberate rather than coincidental.
The Citadel was raised several metres above the surrounding ground. This elevation served two purposes. It physically separated the public and administrative buildings from ordinary housing, and it protected these structures from the annual floods of the Indus. The Class 12 history account of Mohenjodaro notes that the Citadel held the city’s most significant public buildings, including the Great Bath, a large granary, and what appear to be assembly halls. Walls and gated entries marked the boundary between this raised section and the rest of the city.
The Lower Town was where most people actually lived and worked. It contained houses, workshops, markets, and wells, all laid out in an orderly fashion. A massive brick wall surrounded this area, with gateways for entry and exit. The decision to wall both sections, and to place the public buildings on a separate platform, reflects a society that thought carefully about zoning long before the word existed. Notably, archaeologists have found no grand palaces or royal tombs here, which sets Mohenjodaro apart from contemporary Mesopotamia and Egypt and has led many scholars to suggest a more collective form of civic organisation.
Grid-like streets and lanes
If you looked down on the Lower Town from above, you would notice that its streets follow a deliberate pattern. The main streets ran in two directions, north to south and east to west, crossing one another at almost perfect right angles. This grid pattern divided the settlement into neat rectangular blocks, each of which could then be filled with houses and lanes.
A hierarchy of roads
The street system was not uniform in size. Instead, it followed a clear hierarchy. The broadest main streets were wide enough for cart traffic moving in both directions, with some thoroughfares reported at around nine to ten metres across. Branching off from these were narrower lanes meant chiefly for pedestrians and pack animals. The study of Harappan urban planning explains that this arrangement allowed for the efficient movement of people and goods while keeping residential interiors quieter and more private.
An interesting detail is that the doors of houses usually opened onto the smaller lanes rather than the main streets. This kept the principal thoroughfares clear and gave homes a degree of seclusion. The width of the roads and the consistency of the blocks point to shared planning rules, since similar proportions appear across cities hundreds of kilometres apart.
A semi-grid, not a perfect one
It is worth being precise here. While Mohenjodaro is often described as a grid city, the layout was not flawlessly geometric. Within the larger blocks, the lanes were less rigidly aligned, and researchers have noted occasional doglegs and dead ends. A detailed survey of the streets of Mohenjo-daro records that the regularity, though real, was far from perfect. This actually strengthens the case for conscious planning. The orderliness suggests the founders began on cleared, virgin ground and set out a deliberate framework, even if practical building over centuries introduced small irregularities. Academic work on the grid and modular measures in Harappan town planning shows that the lanes tended to turn at right angles rather than cut diagonally, reinforcing the idea of a measured, rule-based layout.
The drainage systems
Perhaps no feature of Mohenjodaro impresses modern planners more than its drainage. While other ancient civilisations of the same period relied on open channels or had little organised waste removal, the Harappans built an underground, covered network that connected individual homes to the public street drains.
How the system worked
Nearly every house had a bathing area and provision for carrying away wastewater. Inside the homes, vertical pipes set into the walls and chutes directed water from upper floors and bathing platforms down to the street level. From there, the water flowed into covered street drains that ran alongside the roads. The drains were built of carefully fitted baked bricks, with specially shaped bricks used to form corners, and the joints were sealed with mortar. A description of the Mohenjo-daro street drains notes that they were mostly hidden underground, topped with brick or limestone slabs that could be lifted for cleaning.
This last point matters. The system was designed not just to remove waste but to be maintained. Small settling pools and traps were built in so that sediment could collect and be periodically removed, keeping the channels from clogging. Reporting on how Harappan cities managed their drains highlights that every street and lane across the neighbourhoods had this provision, an achievement that several modern Indian cities still struggle to match during the monsoon.
Public health by design
The wider significance of this drainage is that it shows a civic priority placed on sanitation and public health. House drains connected to larger road drains, which fed into still bigger sewers. A scholarly account of sanitation and wastewater technologies in the Indus Valley describes covered drains connecting to main sewers, ensuring waste was efficiently carried away from living areas. The fact that even modest homes were linked to this network suggests that clean surroundings were treated as a shared community standard rather than a privilege reserved for the elite.
Public wells and amenities
Water supply was the other half of the equation. Mohenjodaro was unusually well provided with wells, and many of these were publicly accessible. Estimates suggest the city may have had several hundred wells, with some scholars putting the figure at around seven hundred. These were built of wedge-shaped bricks that locked together to form sturdy circular shafts capable of lasting for generations.
The distribution of wells reflects a thoughtful approach to communal life. Some houses had their own private wells, while clusters of homes or whole neighbourhoods shared a common public well. This meant that clean water was rarely far from any household. The record of sanitation at Mohenjo-daro describes how individual homes or groups of homes drew water from wells, with wastewater then directed into the covered street drains, completing a full cycle of supply and disposal within the city.
The Great Bath and other public structures
Beyond ordinary wells, the Citadel held larger water amenities. The most famous is the Great Bath, a rectangular tank made watertight with finely fitted bricks and a layer of bitumen. It had steps leading down at either end and a drain to empty it, and most scholars believe it was used for ritual or ceremonial bathing rather than everyday washing. The presence of such a structure, alongside the granary and assembly halls, shows that the Harappans invested in shared civic and possibly religious spaces. The UNESCO description of the site lists the public baths, the elaborate drainage, the wells, the soak pits for sewage, and the large granary together as testimony to a well-organised civic and social system.
Why the layout still matters
The layout of Mohenjodaro is studied today not just as ancient history but as a reference point for urban planning. The separation of public buildings from residential zones, the hierarchy of wide streets and narrow lanes, the integrated drainage, and the wide access to water are principles that planners still debate and apply. Chandigarh, designed in the twentieth century on a grid system, is often compared to these ancient layouts, showing how old the underlying ideas really are. For a society that lacked modern surveying tools, the Harappans achieved a level of order that speaks to careful thought, shared standards, and a genuine concern for how people lived together.
What stands out, finally, is the absence of monuments to individual rulers and the abundance of shared infrastructure. The city seems built around the daily needs of its residents, clean water, waste removal, safe movement, and protection from floods, rather than around the glory of a king. That priority is perhaps the most modern thing about a city that is more than four thousand years old.
